Wow time really does fly when you are having fun! This will be my 7th year with Camp Quality Manitoba and it feels just like yesterday that I started, however, now I feel a lot more relaxed and confident about being a part of the organization.
I am now starting my 3rd year as the Camp Director and I am feeling the excitement of it all as opposed to the apprehension or anxiety that I have felt previously. Being Camp Director is quite a responsibility, but thanks to a great Camp Organizing Committee we get the work done without much stress and obviously have some fun while we are doing it as well.
I have found through my involvement with Camp Quality that I get a warm fuzzy feeling and am constantly amazed. The children and young people that come to Camp Quality have been through so much dealing with cancer that they are often more mature then their age and yet still just want to do the same things that every other child gets to experience while growing up. To see the children playing or interacting during an activity makes me smile as I see that this is a time where cancer takes a back seat and having fun is the main priority. Camp is a unique experience that I think provides a lot of opportunities, but also is a necessity in development. While at camp children get to experience the outdoors, make new friends and try new things all while away from their parents. This requires and allows them to be somewhat independent and responsible. Camp Quality is no different than any other camp in that we offer those same experiences to our campers. The only exception is that we offer the one to one companion to assist if required or just to be that special friend, which is another huge positive aspect to Camp Quality. This is one of the main reasons as to why I keep coming back. It is my drug and I hope that I am able to offer each and every one who comes to Camp Quality Manitoba that same feeling!
