Who can volunteer for Med Team?
Physicians and Nurses (RN/LPN) currently volunteer. We require an active, current license for the province in which the camp you attend is being held and up-to-date BCLS.

Can a student or grad nurse volunteer at camp?
Yes, provided that the Head Nurse and Camp Organizing Committee (COC) agree and that there is an RN/LPN that agrees to act as the preceptor. Please check with your academic institution (student nurses) or college of nurses (grads) for the forms.

Can volunteer hours at camp count for practice hours?
Yes, most colleges accept 8 hours per day during camp towards practice hours.

What is the role of the medical team, what can I expect?
First of all, expect a great time. Camp Quality medical teams are known for having a great sense of humour; after all, laughter is the best medicine. The Head Nurse is responsible for reviewing all camper medical forms prior to camp.

On the first day of camp one or two members of the medical team greets each camper as they arrive and go over their medical forms again to ensure that there are no changes to the child's condition or treatment regimen. During the rest of the camp week, the medical team works on a rotating 24-hour schedule for giving medications and being on call. A member of the med team accompanies each off-site activity and at least one member of the med team is present on the campgrounds at all times.

When going off-site, the med team is provided with first aid kits and emergency phones. Most treatments include first-aid, dressings, icing and wraps for bumps, bruises, sprains and cuts. Our camp physicians are available for treatments such as sutures as well. Mosquito bites and sunburns are probably the most common, however, we strongly encourage a ''slip, slap, slop'' policy to avoid as much sun exposure as possible.

Nurses assist campers and staff with maintaining their regular medication routines at the camp infirmary. Regular charting and MAR sheets are strictly adhered to. Most common meds are po and sc administration. Camps are always located within an hour of a hospital should there be a need for x-rays or other diagnostic treatments or more serious care.

Are treatments done on-site?
This will be assessed on an individual basis, depending on the treatment and in consultation the prescribing physician, facilitity and the camp medical team. Arrangements are made for campers to be transported and escorted by their companion and a member of the medical team to a treating facility if a scheduled treatment happens during camp week. However, many treating physicians and facilites will opt to re-schedule treatments for before or after camp...since they realize how much fun camp week is.
